Serious Floods Avoided

Fears of flooding in the Gisborne district eased late yesterday when, following an abatement of the all nighf and morning rain, the sv/ollen rivers began to fall slowly. The Waipaoa River reached within six inches of flood level in' its " upper reaches. When the rain eased off over 3i inches had fallen ih 24 hours in the hill country. The main south road which, like other outiets, was blocked earlier yesterday, is now open. On the Motuhora branch railway, a goods train was delayed by a chain long subsidence which is being cleared. Traffic on. the line to Napier is normal.
