Wairarapa Settlers Work To Repair Damage

WELLINGTON, Juiy 3. While the full position would not be disclosed until the flood waters liad reeeded f rom ' all f armS, a prelimfnary estimate. of stock losses in the Wairarapa would be about 9000 sheep and 300 head of cattle, said the Assistant Director-General of Agriculture, Mr. R. B. Tennent, toniglit. Mr. Tennent visited the distriet today, to assist in the setting up of a committee to help the settlers. From the national point of view the losses were not as serious as had been expected earlier, said Mr. Tennent, but in saying that he did not want to mininiise the grievous losses suff'ered by individual farmers. The settlers in the flooded areas were showing an exceptionally fine spirit ancl were getting right down to the job of repairing the damage. The restoration of fences would be one of the chief pfoblems partieularly in view of the present acute shortage of materials. Referring to the setting; up of a committee comprised of representatives of Government departments and of Pederated Farmers, Mr. Tennent said the aim was to give the speediest assistance possible. It would funetion through the Department of Agriculture in cooperation with Federated Farmers.
