First Lambs of Season , Three lariibs born on the property of Mr. W. Bowker, at Ihakara, are the first to be reported this season. They are RomneySouthdown cross lambs and the first was born on Monday last. Coal Prices Increased Coal and coke prices in Levin have been increased by 3d a 1401b bag, making the.price 4s 6d. The increase has been granted by the Ptice Tribunal as the result of the discohtinuance of the Governmeht subsidy that has been in operation for some time.
Young Farmers' Outing A group of 25 people from the Levin Young Farmers' Group was introduced to the Mayor of Wellfngton, Mr. Appleton, on Wednesday as part ,of-,;the interchange of, visits hetween town and country sponsored by the Wellington Junior Chamber of; Commerce. The party spenfc the morning sightseeing. • ' Social Security Payments The Minister of Social Security (Mr. Parry) annouhces that the family benefits will be paid this month on Thursday, July 10, instead of Friday, July 11. The reaSon for paying a day earlier is to relieve pressure on post offices on Frid'ays. Ih August war pensions will be payable on August 21 and Social Security monthly benefits will be paid on August 19 and 20. j-Force Men Due Sunday The returning draft of 2nd N.Z.E.F. personhel from Japan will reach Wellington by the Dunera on Sunday morning. Those men ' whose homes are in the Horowhenua, Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay and Gisborne districtswill be dispatched from Wellington by a special train leaving at 10.30 a.m. and arriving in Levin at approximately 12.40 p.m. Unique Reuniom An extraordiriary meettng took place at Dunedin on the field in the Otago-South Africa Association football match. • The11 referee (Mr. W. M. Smith) walked over to Wilson, the Springbok centre forward, and asked if he had ever been in a prisoner-of-war camp. Wilson said j "Yes," ahd so two ex-prisoners ' whose homes are thousands of miles apart met again. Both were prisoners at Stalag IVA in Muhlberg, Germany, Wilson from 1943 to the end of the war arid Smith for the final 17 months of the war.
Gorge Road Closed at Weekend The highway througn the Manawatu Gorge will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday till 4 p.m.- Sunday to enable workmen to get a clear run to biddge temporarily the Wa,shout 1 in the y road near the Ballance Bridge. Wairarapa traffic is asked. to use. the Pahiatua hill road and Hawke's Bay traffic Saddle Road which connects Woodville with Ashhurst. Ballance settlei's will be the only ories who will be able to use the Gorge .because the washout happens to be on the Woodville side of the Ballance Bridge. False Teeth for Baby An upper set of artificial dentures has been made for a three months' old baby by an Invercargill dentist to a doctor's orders. The baby was breast-fed, but was unable to suckle satisfactorily. All sorts of methods were considered, as it was not thought that weaning . the baby would provide an adequate solution to the problem. The doctor then conceived the idea that dentures would be the answer and as an experiment gave the dentist an order for two pairs of upper sets. Grie of these was fitted into the infant's mouth and it began to feed with complete success. Th,e dentist said he would have to make a new SCt every two months to keep pace with ~ the f jbaby's grdwth. ,
