The vote foiloWed a spii-it ed debate in whi$h objeetions weri raised over Hawaii 's distance- frOn United States and its mixed racial complexioil. The racial objeetiOhS wel'e raised ori the ground that the population was abotit one-third of japanese extractibli Representative Preston (Detnocrat Georgia) ealled them "descendants oi the Emperor of Japan" but other mein bers protested that the Japanese iii Hawaii were more loyal, more de voted and gave better Servifce to United States during the war than the Japanese in Californla. The Bill, which was introduced by delegate Joseph Farrington (Repiiblican, HaWaii), said it would enable Hawaii to foiin a constitutioii ahd state government and to be admitted to the union on aii ecjuhl footing with tlle other States. The Haivaiian delegate to Congress is now elected every two vears, has flodr priyijegeS in the Holise but no vote. U?fie Sili how gbes to the Senate where early, action is doubtful.
