Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. NEW YORK, June 30. , One of the three cricicai levees which yestetday witfistood the shary earthquake today crumbled before the highest flood in the Mississippi rivei in 103 years. Engineers said the Chouteau Islahd ievee near G-ranite City, Illinois, broke at 9.30 a.m. today sending flood water pouring over 2000 acres but there was no immediate danger tc Granite City. The engineers said the Dupo embankment and iohg Degog nia dyke south of Chester, were holding but it was feared that they too might cutmble. All three levees were shaken hy last night's earthquake but the engineers said the Chouteau Island break was dlie entirely to water pressure. The Mississippi flood level stood at 39.3 feet at 6.30 a.m. today. In 1844 it reached 41.3. The Mississipi river, after flattening out at St. Louis today, began ris ing again tonight as the resulo oi two inches of rain. The weather b'ureau helieved the rise would bt. slight. Flood damage is generally confined to tne rmmediate St. Louix riverfront districts.
