GISSORNE, June 27. On eharges of failing to provide i meal a'nd aecommodation tp ifavellers, -Michael Hyland, prpprietpr of-. the Waiapu Hptel at Tikitiki, was today fined £2 and £3 -'espectivfily, with costs and wit-. nessea' . expenses totalling £4 16s. * Edwih A. W- Swenson of Auekiand, said the defendant had >efused him and his wife aecommodation, a meal or a cup of tea and bread and ' butter on the grounds of a shortage of staff. A charge of failing to provide aecommodation for Swenson was dismissed, but Mr. E. L. Walton, iS.M., held that a publieah was expected to provide meals for legitimate travellers. " On a seeond eharge of failing. to provide aecommodation for R. C. Otway, of Gisborne, the evidence showed that Otway 'phon.ed -for aecommodation, but when he arrived he was refused lodging. Hyland's only explanation was that he wanted to havo a look at Otway before decidjng.
