Pcrsonftl Mr. A. Pentecost, of Greymouth, is spending a holiday withhis sister, Mrs. A. E. Burli'ng, Grey Street. Mrs. J. D. Campbell, of Mangaore, returned home on Friday after visiting her sons in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. K. Mitchell, East Road, have returned home after spending a fortnight's motor trip up the East Coast to Auckland and back via New Plymouth. Stopbank Subsidy Granted The Public Works Department has advised the Manawatu-Oroua River Board that a £3 for £1 subsjdy has been approved for the work on the Barber-Terrell stopbank- at Moutoa. The department also advised that the tender of Mr. J. Newth might be accepted by the board. May Weather During May rain fell on 12 days at No. 1 dam Mangahao and measured 8.77 inches. For the same period at the Mangaore power house the rainfall measured 3.06 inches, and there were ten wet days. With the heavy rains experienced this month, the dams have been full for the past two weeks. Motor Drivers' Licenses Drivers of motor vehicles have until the end of the present month in which* to renew their driver's licences. Speaking at a meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening, the town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) stated that so far 103 licences have been issued. Mr. Bovis desired to impress upon those who have not already made application for renewal, to do so without ,delay. The applications will be dealt with during normal office hours by the town clerk. Soil Erosioli at Shannon The need for immediate attention to arrest erosion that is still takrng place near the- house belonging to Messrs. Bryant Bros. at Moutoa was mentioned by Mr. A. E. Burling in a letter to the Mana-watu-Oroua River Board recently. Mr. Burling considered that a :net or groyne would alleviate the trouble, and that "the Goverhment would release one if the urgency of the case was put to it. On the motion of the chairman of the board (Mr. J. Crystall) it was decided to advise Mr. Burling that the nets were unobtainable, and that ,the board's engineer. (Mr.. H. R. Farquhar) would keep it advised of the erosion position there. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr. S. Newth, with power to act should the position become more serious.
