Building Petmits Building activity in Levin continues buoyantly. Duri'ng the month of May the Levin Borough Council issued three permits for new dwellings, the total value of them being £4530. For the first two ffionths of the current financial ^ear eight permits, valued in the aggregate at £l2,560, have been issued for new dwellings. In Uddition four permits of a value of £180 have been i&sued for alterations and additions • to existihg buildings. Mail Jettisoned Eighteen bags of mail froin the B.C.O.F. for Australia and New Zealand were ieftisoned on Jurie 18, when an, engine failed ..on an R.A.A.F. Courier over the Halmaheras. The piane, which had just left Mor.otai on the last leg of a four-day trip from Tokio to Darwin, returned safely to Morotai after jettisoning ail, mail, freight and baggage. The shooting appears to be by a rifle of small calibre— a .22 it is alleged — ahd though the matter is in the hands of the pdliee it is a diffic'ult proposition tosheet home to those responsible. Two valuable horses owned by Messrs. Graham and Pitiroi, of Wairakei and Taupo respeetively, were destroyed,though the animals were -in a wellfenced paddoek. It is suggested that passing motorists with rifles may be responsible. Similar accidents have happened near Rangitaiki, where cattle have also beeii destroyed by rifle fire.
