AMERICA CLAMPS DOWN ON PETROL EXPORTS

Tlio Commerce Dopartment announcP(1 toniglit tliat maritune controls would be reimposecl on June 30 on the exporc of petrol and otlier petroleuxn products to all foreign countries except Cauada. The announcement said: "Export control is necessary if the limited donioslic supply is to l)e protected and United States' petioleum exports are to be used in the interest of world recayery. ' ' The announcement was made after consultation with the Department of the interior, Ariny, X avv and otlier Govermuent agencies. The department antieipates that. Congress ivill authorise the extension of the necessary authoritv which otherwise k>pses-on June 30. Tlie United Press says the move is apparently aimed at quieting Congressional eriticism of American oil sliipments to Russia from the Pacific coast. The move will not lialt all oil deliveries to Russia but it is expeeted to reduco tliem substantiallv. The Commerce Department previously stated that 48,625,000 barrels of petroleum products were exported in the first four months of 1947, of whicli Russia received onlv 168,306.
