RAIL CAR DERAILED BY COWS ON LINE
At 7 P-m. last niglit the nortli-bouiKl rail car on the Wairarapa line erashed into several cows 011 the tracli at a« approximate dlstauce of three-quarters of a mile soutli of the -Mangamaire railway station. Nohe of the Iti passdngers was injui-ed. The car was deraiied and stuck fasi in gravel at an angle of 45, degrees. This prevented it from going over tlibuilt up banlc. There was no panic among the passengers wlio made an orderly exit. Under the super visjpn of the guar.l the passengers sitting on the left side escaped through the enxergeney door Whlle those 011 the right. remained in their seats to. keep the nalance. of the .vehieie. Then the latter cautiously, left the car by the front door. The passengers continued* their journey b> railway jigger to Mangamaire and thence by bus to their various destintt tions. Those travelling to. Auckland were abie to conneet with the north .tra'in at Palmerston North. A break-down erane was dispatehed from Palmerston North to clear the line.
