SUBSIDIES WITHDRAWN FROM FREEZING WORKS

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 23. Although the Government has made no announcement concerning the withdrawal of subsidies being paid to freezing companies 011 meat exported overseas, Taranaki f reezing companies Jxave received a circular from the Marketing Department announcing that two of the subsidies have been withdrawn and that retrospective repayment will have to be made. Subsidies to freezing works were discussed at Wellington the week before last by representatives of the Economic Stabilisation Commission, representatives of the Freezing WTorks Association and the export division of tlm Marketing Department, and the commission reported to the Minister in charge of stabilisation, Mr. Nordmeyer. The circular stated that two of the subsidies were withdrawn and that payments on them would have to be refund ed. The circular states that the withdrawal of subsidies is retrospective. The amount that will have • to be refunded will be a eonsiderable sum, according to the manager of one freezing eompany. The payment of subsidies was commenced during the war to assist freezing works to meet increased costs ahd they were paid on all carcases killed for export. Subsidies were introdueed at different times to cover certain periods in the season 's working. Both those stated in the circular to have been withdrawn were introdueed during 1944, one to cover the period between October 1 and Mareh 17 and the other the period between March 17 and May 23. During both periods this year the subsidies were paid but in each case they have been wit-.drawn as from the commencing date for each period. Both were of &d per lb on all meat exported. The circular added that two similar subsidies to covei" other periods of the year were to be reviewed.
