" President Truman^ det'ending his veto of the Bill whi'ch earlier in the day was. overridden' by the Bopse.oii .Representatives, said the " Bill ' "abused' the right of Americans to join together and bargain with employers for fair wages^ and working conditions. He said this type of legislation would -cause the people to divide . into opposing groups,; causing discord and conflict and .tlireatening the nation 's role in the world. 's postwar recovery. _ j President Truman predicted that if the Bill became law the employers,; thems.e'lves would regret the day it was conceived. "It is loaded with provisions that will plague and hamper management and is hlled with hidden 'legal traps that will take labour relations out of the plane where they belong Und place them in the courts," he added. Senator Robert Taft (Republican, Ohio), co-author of the Bill, replying to President Truman in a nationwicie broadcast, said the President misrepre- ; sented the issue and accepted the Lab- j our leaders' prejudiced .arguments. jSenator Taft recalled that President' Truman himself, during the nationwide ; railway strike last year, recommende'd stringent labour legislation. "Now' when Congress gives him -a carefuliy draf ted authority to delay such a strike, io attempt mediation and finally to con*duct a strike vote when other remedies ire exhausted, he says the procedure will do more harm than good, " he added. Meanwhile a small band of Senators jpposing the Bill, continues to debate ; a motion to override the Presidential veto in the hope of staving off a qurcK vote and perhaps pick up enough second : thought suppott to nphold the veto. Republican leaders served notice that they will contiuue the session indeiinite- | ly to force a showdown. •
