An opidemie of disease lingering on ihe communal disturbauces and an nnpreeedented vvave of crime continue to harass Calcutta citizens, says the Times Oalcutta eor.rospondent. C-holera still rages. The explanation of the present opidemie is the insanitary condition of the -city as a direet .result of several weeks of une.easing communal troublos. Between May 24 and June 19 201 persons died from cholera. 'Communal assaults, stabbings and ' bornb throwings have diminished sinee' the decision to partition India was announced but they remain almost a dailv feature of life. Noneomimunal crime is a source of growing anxiety. Unernplovment, indust rial unrest, a dearth of food and elothing and general postwar restlessness, appear to be the main canses. There have been 98 murders and 2000 burgkries in the past 5} months. The streets are no longer safe for the lone -pedestKan bv dav or night.
