— — » COMMITTEE'S JUNE MEETING . ' ■ - * ;■ % Those present. at. t'he June meeting of the Shannon School' Committee were Messrs. A'. E. Jeffrey (chairman) , L. J. Bowler (secretary) , S. Free,' F. J. Lueinsky, E. Barber, F. Bradey and. Mrs. C. StGI'Yl It was decided to have the pine trees in the vicinity of the swimming pool topped, and arrangements were discussed i'n respect of Messrs. Jeffrey, Free, Bowler,' Lueinsky. and Mrs. $tern going to Wellington as a deputatio'n to the Education Board in connection with obtaining an extension of the Kingston Road bus service. Messrs. Barber and Bradley were appointed visiting committeemen for the month of June. The headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, reported for May as follows: "The school roll stands at 138 girls and 139 boys. There have been 20 admissions and three withdrawals during the mo'nth. The position as regards the roll • has improved markedly and with the. prospects of further enrolments before September it seems that the school will at least ' hold *its grade. The attendance has been satisfactory and the health of the children is good. Miss N. Flemming and Mr. R. Lind, who had both relieved during the term, have gone to other positions, and Mr. R. D. Patrick and .Miss I. Bloomfield commenced duties at. the beginning of this term as permanent teachers. "During the school vacation necessary repair work .was carried out. To make provision for those. children who arrive by ..bus at school at 8.10 a.m. the fire in the central heating stove-is being kept in over night. In the event.of wet or very cold weather, these children will have two warm rooms to go to on arrival. "Over 90 children are now taking the cocoa made • at school at lunch time. It is made by.a member of the staff, i$ 50 per cpent. milk and is issued under. staff supervision. The children p'av- Is
for the term, or ld per cup if not taking it regularly. .This does not pay the cost so the. sqhool committee pays the balance'. . "On the first day of the term holidays a working bee of the senior pupils ■ plapted 18 dozen plants after digginghn about four yards of manure. The school owes thanks to Mr. Bowlejy f or the gift of two loads of manure and- two -ornamental shrubs." 'k. . .
