S.emple) statecl today that consequent on the rains which Tiave occurred in the vario.us power geueration areas dttring ,the receiit series of westerly depressions it was now possible tp remove the greater part of 'the emergency restrictions which had been imposed upon North Island poweT ttsefS for the past three months. ' The power supply authorities were being advised that from next week they eould rettlrn to the basis of allocation on which they were operating at the beginning- of the,*year7i-t.hat |s ttf say that from now 011 they would be given alloeation in units istjgeneral - equal to 3 pcr cent more units than they received in the correspoiiding week of last year or in the previous year in cases where that might have been highet than last year. ; However, at least until the second tinit of Karapiro was in operation it would still be necessary to place a limit on the amount of power that could be suppli«ed at times of peak loading. The supply authorities were therefore also being advised that until further notiee it would be necessary to limit their demand on peak 'to'an amount e(iual to the peak demand in the eorresponding week of previous years. Th'e Minister expressed appreciation of.the wav in which a most difficult situation had been handled by tire oflicials of various supply authorities and on the eooperation which had been extended to them and to tho department by various consumers throughout the country. , ' ' " Power shortages were not confined to New Zealand, said the Minister, and it would* be necessary for some yeais to cxercise economy in the use of this vital commodity to gN e the countiy iull opportunity to onteb up on the programme of constructibn which had been so seriously delayed by conditions brought about by the war and its aftcrmath.
