Early Settlers Meet At a recent meeti'ng of the Early Settlers' Committee it was decided to resume its activities. The committee had been in reeess since the war and the reunions are to be Jield as previously. Several matters of interest were discussed and the /officers for the ensuing year elected. A further meeting is to be held next month and an invitation is again extended to all the early settlers of Levin to attend, when several matters are to be discussed further. Jute from India The Indian Government has denied a report gttributed to New Zealand alleging th'at india was allocating jiite o'nly to countries sending India food, and asking United Kingdom to release New Zealand from certain food commitments so that she could get Indian iute. An Indian Government oflicial said New Zealand, in common with other countries, , received jute quotas based on prewar imports. Argentina was the only country on a grain for jute basis because Argentina had large quantities of grain for export. Taxation Outlook A gloomy view of the taxation outlook in New Zealand was taken by counsel on both sides of proceedings under the Family Protection Act ~heard in the Supreme Court in Palmerston North yesterday. The point was raised as to whether a beneficiary might derive some further benefit from a monetary legacy should there be a reduction i'n taxation. "With the way things are being carried out in New Zealand at present it would not matter what Government got into power it would be pretty well impossible to reduce .taxation," counsel claimed despQndently.

Huge Whale Caught, After a long, fast chase, whjch ranged from Wellington Head to Terawhiti and jncluded hours of chasing at an average speed of 25 miles an hour. Tory Ghannel whalers caught the second to largest whale in the history of the Te Awaiti whaling station— a blue whale measuring more than 96 ft., in length. The chase began when tb.e whale was -sighte.d off Wellington Head at 8 a.m. When three chasers arrived on the scen'e the whale made for The Brothers Islands and from there to Cape Terawhiti.
