SEMPLE ON BARNES

WELLINGTON, June 13, As Mr. H. Barnes (national president of the Waterside Workers' Eederation) was unable to get to the Labour Conference to faee Mr. Sempie on his crxticism, and as the conference baeked the Government, the duel between Mr. Barnes and Mr. Sempie is continued at loixg range. Mr. Sempie eommented today that Mr. Barnes' reason for his non-attendance was best known to hiinself.- Certainly it was not a lack of transport. "1 can only surmise," he continued, ' ' that ,Mr. Barixes thought discretion the better part of valour and chose to re.main in Aucklaxxd rather than clash with nxe in debate before the conference. He is eitdeavouviug to confuse the issue by treating my criticism of himself as axx attack on his union. He should iight his own battles. Yesterday he left it to others to. answer for him. Now he is whipping up his union to (•arry 011 the Iight. H-e will not side-tr-aek me by -attributing nxy e-riticism to his union and not to hiinseif. "-I will fxght my own battles,. Let this gentleman do tlie same. Yesterday, before the Labour Conference, others spoke oxx Mr, Barnes' behalf. I spoke on my own. My attitude and views on the rnatter are vindicated by the fact that on the motion being pxxt four only out of 534 voters expressed any conlxdence in Mr. Barnes. ' '
