BUCKLEY GOLF CLUB

WINTER CONDITIONS ARRIVE Hard fairways and' fast greens, which have been the order of the day on the Buckley Golf Club's links, are fast becoming only a memory of last summer's golfing conditions. During the past week or so the slowing up of the fairways and the appearance ' of a heavier growth of grass on the greens. has, been most noticeable. The recent rain has also had the effect of illustrating the marked difference between summer and winter golfing conditions. To many golfers this seasonal change places another obstacle in the path of obtaining the satisfaction derived from playing to one's handicap. Judging by the scores handed in over the weekend, it is apparent that the majority of local golfers are experiencing no difficulty in adapting themselves to the heavier winter conditions. On Saturday afternoon the June medal round was played and incorporated in this was the second qualifying round. One of the club's leading players, J. Mabey, winner of the recent tournament championship, did justice to his handicap by returning a card of 77. E. T. Wilson played some good golf in carding his 79. Other cards handed in -were as follows: N. Mabey 80, C. Stern 80, J. Chambers 82, H. Stern 83, H. Mabey 83, W. Stern 83., D. Purcell 84, F. Picard 86, J. Stern 92, C. Young 90, W. C. Higgie 91, H. Pope 91, B. Harris 96, J. Baker 99, R. S. Downes 102 and T. E. Harrison 102. On Sunday afternoon .a fourball best ball bogey competition was played, N. Mabey and Don Purcell having the best card, having "thrashed the Colonel" to the extent of six up— a fine performance. Next best was T. Harrison and V. Pope, who returned a card fiVe up on the "Colonel." Other cards were as follows: — W. Stern and R. Rasmussen four up, J. Stern and W. C. Higgie two up, J. Chambers and C. Young two up, F. Picard and F. Edmonds one up, J; and H. Mabey one up, H. Karena and R, Harding one up, C. and H. Stern all square, V. Picard and H. Morgan all square, K. Thomson and H. Pope one down. "Top Dogs" The "top dogs" competition was taken a stage further over the weekend when the holders, V.. Picard and' B. Harris, had no' great difficulty ■ in warding off a challenge from: IW. C. Higgie and J. Chambers. Next week the b,old~ ers will play K. Thomson and V.' E. Tippler. It is hinted that a.iyefy' close match will 'result,, the challengers having every confidence of up-rooting the present holders,Handicap Reductions In spit'e of the heavy conditions/ the handicap committee found it nece&sary to "apply the knif6" to fi've . members who played below their handicaps. The reductions are as follows':— D. Purcell reduced from 15—11 to 14—11, K. Thomson from 8—6 to 7—5, W. C. Higgie from 19—17 to 18—17, R. S. Downes from 28 — 21 to 27 — 21, J. Chambers from 13 — 9 to 12 — 8. Players are reminded that nominations for the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup close on June 15. Players wishing to compete in this competition are requested to place their names on the list in the clubhouse. Next Saturday 's competition will take the form of a bogey.
