TO SPEED UP BUILDING OF HOUSES
«. WELLINGTON, June 9. A new attempt to eliminate delays and bottlenec.ks in the supply of building materials was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, when addressing the Labour Party conference. He announced the appointment of Mr. M. Moohan, M.P., one of his Under-Becretaries, as chairman of a . new committee of officials charged with the dutv of coordinating th'e~suppiv of bnilding materials in an effort to speed up the construetion of houses. The Prime Minister said it would be the committee 's duty to search ourevexy available source of supply so thr. i the- Labour Party 's piedge to construct li:,000 houses yearly in New Zealand co'uld be fulfilled. Referrin'g -to State houses, Mr. Eraser said housing settlements already completed were excellent and :better than ariything he had seen on overseas tours. The aim in New Zealand was to create garden suburbs. "There have been hitches . but substitut'es will be found which will enable the people to get into • decen". homes, " said Mr. Fraser. "We are not dismayed with those -diffieulties because we are grappling with them now."
