A U vlV.LilX*.Y JL/^ O ULJLL *7 1 All countries are facing a shortage in hospital staft's because there have been such tremendous increases in hospital isation in the last six or seven years uilder diti'erent forms of treatments, said Miss M. I. Lambie, O.B.E., of Wellington, Director of Nursing fc3ervices, who returned by elipper from a visit to Uanada and United States.. With Miss L. Banks, matron of the Palmerston North hospital and vice president ot the New Zealand Eegistered Nurses' Association she attended the conference of the International Counc-il of. Nurses. The business sessions of the conference were held at Washington and the general meeting at Atlantic City. Miss Lainbie said 6980 nurses attended the conference, 780 of them coining. from countries outside United States. Practically every country was represented excepting Russia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Many European nurses were assisted in the payment of passages and provision of accommodation, by the, American Nurses' Association. Pro-^ ceedings were extremeJy interesting and they were of great value, partiCularly"to nurses from Europe who had not been able to meet in conference since before the war. The problems of meeting staff shorh ages and a review of the .training of nurses under these circumstances, oeeupied most of the deliberations. After the conference euded Miss Lambie visited hospitals at Toronto and Montreal and Miss Banks saw hospitalsat Chicago and Cleveland.
