TRAMPERS CROSS TARARUAS

Mr. Doug. James, together with a party of eight members of the Manawatu Tramping Club, made a successful crossing of the Tararuas last weekend. The trip was made under winter conditions. The party left Mitre Hut on the Masterton side at 4.15 a.m. on Suhday and passed over Mitre Peak (5154 ft.) , the highest point in the Tararua Range, then over Girdlestone "Peak (5090 ft.) , the Waia-. hine pinnacles, Lancaster (4830 ft.) and Arete (4975 ft.). With already a foot of snow on the mountains and .snow falling the wholfe trip, ' together with a biting southerly wind, the trip was a very strenuous. one and it was a party of tired trampers that reached Te Matawai Hut, on the Levin side, 12i hours after 'leaving the Mitre Hut.
