Harvesting Almost Complete The harvesting of potatoes and onions is now practically completed in the various market gardening areas of the district. The onion harvest was fully iavo months late this year, leaving the growers with the problem of what to do with their ground, for many crops planted now will not Eland much of achance against the wet and cold weather conditions wlnch can be expected from now on. A Mild Autumn. The recent frosts have brought to a close one of the mildest autumns experienced in this district for some years. Feed has been plentiful on most farms and in a good many cases diificulty has been experienced in drying off the early calving cows. A few frosts like those already experienced will soon put a stop to surplus feed, and those farmers wno have. not already started supplementary feeding will not be long in doing so. Institute Members' Tour The Manawatu Federation of Women's Institutes is to be congratulated on its initiative in sponsoring a nine days' tour of Rotorua, Waitomo Caves, Wanganui and surrounding districts for members of the institute in their area. . A highlight of the tour was a flight over Rotorua. Those who went from this district were well pleased with the arrangements made for their comfort, and voted the tour a great success. Fire Engine Arrives Deputy-Superintendent C. Tremewan and Firemen G. Mc--Ewen (secretary) i and. B. Coultei> of the local fire brigade, visrted Wellington on Friday to take delivery of Shannon's new fire engine. At approximately 5 p.m. the screaming of the machine's siren heralded their arrival back home. The new machine, which is indeed a credit to the town, attracted considerable interest on Friday evening, ' when it was on display in the main street.
