— : — • — ■**■ Received Wednesday, 9.30 p.m. SYDNEY, June 4, The first sod in the Government'? £11,000,000 scheme to convert Kingsford- Smith aerodrome at Mascot into the greatest airport in Australia, . was turned today by tengineers of the De partment of Works and ,Housing. About £5,000,000 will be spent in filling in Coak's River and improving the existing landing ground. The engineers plau to make a, huuway of 12,000 feet a cross the existing lagoon . and river. The campletion of the work will take moruthan ten years but the first vunway wili he comRleted in five years. More than £6,000,000 will be spent in establishing a flyingboat base at Botany Bay for wrhich extensive alterations wili be. made to the water frontage adjoining the aerodrome. The^resulting landplane an.d flyingboat base will be recog ni.sed as the Austvalian terminal for ab uiajor air- services operating between; America, England, the East, New Zealand and Australia-. * ,
