FOOTWEAR TO BE IMPORTED
CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. Licences for the iniportation into New Zealand of 400,000 pairs of footwear from countries in the sterling area are to be granted to importers by the Minister oi Customs, Mr. Nordmover. Adviee of the Minister 's intention to grant the licences was received last week by thp induUrial planning committee of the footwear industry. The viee-president of the committee, Ar r. J. A. East, said this evening that the industry in New Zealand, except the importing section, was definitely antagonistic to the proposal to import footwear from overseas. The industry ciaimed that it could meet the deniand in the Dominion and the planning committee, which acted in an advisory capacity to the Bureau of Industry, had made recommendations on those linos. The committee realised that there was a temporary shortage but considered the slack could be taken up within the next few months. Importing from overseas meant that approximately 14Q oporatives would be temporavily lost ta the footwear industry for every 100,000 pairs o.f shoes imported.
