Received Thursday, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, June 4. A number of prominent Britons recently received envelopes posted in Italy and containing powder which, it is understood, would explode if the envelopes were opened, says Reuter. The recipients became suspieious before openying the envelopes and informed- Scotland Yard.
of the envelopes containing explosive powder was addressed to the President of the Board of Trade, Sir Stafford Cripps, at the Board of Trade offices. The Ministry of Food received a letter addressed to the Minister of Food, Mr. John Strachey, containing three ounces of explosive powder and what appeared to be a fuse device. Another arrived at the Ministry of Fuel. It is also reported that Lord Montgomery received an ex- , plosiv.e envelope. j The outer envelope measures 8| inches by 61 inches and the name and address is typewritten. A smaller envelope is inside, on which is typewritten "Private and Confidential." Police tests show that the powder explodes readily. Post Office and Customs offieials are trying to intercept the letters before they reach the recipients. I The authorities in Italy are trying to trace the senders. It is understood that nobody has yet been injured.
