LARGE GATHERING ON LINKS Almost fifty players gatherecl 0:1 the Buckley golfjlinks over the weekend when the club staged -its usual King's Birthday tournament. Visitors were present from Taihape and Levin, and the local club was represented by an excellent attendance of members. The weather was ideal, but somewhat chilly in the early morning and the late afternoon. , The tournament commenced _on Saturday afternoon when the first qualifying round and teams match was played. A medal round was also incorporated with the qualifying round. The following are the ten best cards for Saturday's play together with the results of the teams match: — First qualifying round: J. Mabey 73, H. Mabey 78, N. Mabey 80, T. Kincaid 81, C. Stern 82, W. Stern 82, E. T. Wilson 83, J. Chambers 83, H. Sterp 84, F. Picard 84. In the teams match Messrs. J., N. and H. Mabey and W.' Stern were the winners with a score of 276. Messrs. W. Higgie, J. Chambers, D. Purcell and B. Harris were second with 285. The winner of the first medal was J. Mabey with a card of 73—6—67 nett. On Sunday morning the second qualifying round was played in conjunction with a medal round. The following are the ten best cards: — E. T. Wilson 76, J. Mabey 79, K. Thomson 81, F. Picard 82, W. Downes, saitf that 'it- wa's his pleasure to present the trophies "to those who had been successful in . the various sections of ' the tournament. Mr. Downes congratulated the' club , for the, very successful function and the" efficient manner " in which it had been conducted, and made mention of the splendid support given those responsible by the club members. He-extended a welcome to the visitors, .especially the Taihape members and Mr. and Mrs. T. Bopn, who had travelled a great distance to be present. The president expressed the thanks of the committee to Mrs. C. Stern, who had charge of the catering arragements, and to the willing band of ladies who assisted her. He mentioned that it was no small task to arrange lunch and afternoon tea for such a large gathering, especially during a period when the shops were closed. Mr. Downes then called upon Mrs. Stern to present the trophies. The winners and runners-up in the various sections were: — Buckley Championship: J. Mabey; runner-up, F. Picard. Ihakara Handicap: N. Mabey; runner-up, T. Kincaid (Taihape). Consolation Handicap: J. Stern; runnerup, H. Karena. First Flight: T. Boon; runner-up, T. Harrison. Second Flight: S. Atkins (Levin) ; runner-up, Mr. Patrick (Taihape). Best gross score over qualifying rounds: J. Mabey (153). First Medal: J. Mabey. Second Medal: D. Purcell. Stableford: E. T. Wilson. Bogey: W. Stern. Foursome: W. and C. Stern. Handicap Reductions The handicap committee advises the following reductions in handicaps as a result of the tournament play: — J. Mabey reduced from 6 to 4, H. Mabey from 10 to 9, D. Higgie from 20 to 19, D. Purcell from 17 to 15, H. Pope from 14 to 12, T. Harrison from 28 to 21. Next Saturday the competition will be for the June medal, with which will be incorporated the second qualifying 'round.
