ARREST IN MYSTERY CASE
•CHRISTCHURCH, June 3. Arrested at Lyttelton at 1 p.m. today on a charge of the manslaughter o James Seddon Jovee, Jack Mclntyre, water side worker, of Norwich Quay Lyttelton, later appeared at a speeia. sitting of the Magistrate's Court. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch on June .17 but a further remand will then be applied for if the police are not ready to proceed with the heai;ing of the charge and inquest. The arrest was made by Senior Detective F. J. Brady • and betectiveSergeant G. W. Alty, of the Clirist church detective office, and DetectivJ E. G. Ward, of Lyttelton, and followe-. five days of investigations at Lyttelton and New Brightoq. Joyce, a water ■iide worker, aged 40 yoars, was founl dead at his home at 9 Lonsdale Street., New Brighton, on ktay 28 and it wa obvious that death had occurred a number of days before. The charge against Mclntyre was that on.May 14 at Lyttelton he inflicteo personal injuries on Joyce and that a the result of such injuries Joyce die at New Brighton on or about May 17 and by so doing he unlawfully kille; Joyce and thereby eommitted the crime of manslaughter. ]\lclntyre was not represented by counsel when he appeared befon Messrs. W. C. Cleary and W. D. Gower J.P.s, at the Lyttelton Magistrate 7 Court, but, instructed by Mr. W. R. Lascelles, he eonsented to the policj application for a remand. Accused wa admitted to bail, the sureties being in self of £300 and one of £300, a conditioi. being that he reported daily to th« police at Lyttelton.
