States onicial radio s uiori m the Japa.iese, capital has tieeu forcea to apologise for relaying a report that "an unidentifiable sea monster tv/enty feet high" had lett the sea and terrorised the inhahitants in the districts hetween TpMo and Yoko- _ hama. The station interrupted its programme for a full hour, giving "progress" reports- of the alleged monster 's progress, ipcluding reports that it had deraiied a train. Hundreds of people teiephoued the radio station asking whether the report was a joke, but the army exchange refused to handle the calls. Fiually after a police convoy in trucxs wifch machiueguns under the command of a Colonel had left to try to locate the "mons.er" the anno..ncer revealed that th'e whole story was a hoax. Gomplaints poured in from all sides and the station spent the re-ma-indsr of the evening intwrupting the programme to apologise. Official quarters refused to comment, but unofficially it is stated that a serious view is taken of the incident.
