The New South Wales Railway De; partinent is preparing for a drastic curtailment of the country service, which will be inevitable unless the department can get the co^l it needs. The department has now less than a week's supply. In fact, it is so short of eoal -that it has difficulty even in hauling coal from the mines. The department eannot use any of the coal it hauls because, like other consumers, it is strietly rationed, Officials afe scratching round in storage dumps for enough coal to hani coal. The coal lost in New South Wales this week because of the strike totalled 79,830 tons. The loss so far^this year in 20 working weelcs is 947,655 tons, which is 427,000 tons greater than that in the corresponding period of last year.
