STOWAWAY LOST OVERBOARD

IIo was David Carroll, aged 36, a second-hand tvre dealer v. ho live ! | with liis sister at 87 Story Street | Rozello, Sydnev. Members of the erew of the Fort I Coulogne wliicli bertlied at Auckland onj Saturday morning, saw Carroll on th.-i ship wai eh ing a consignment of tvresj being loaded before her departure on May 17. On Tuesday night the second j steward, W. Ilall, found him in his! eabin and reported him to the chh-fj steward, W. Lawrence. Carroll, who hau j a package of clothes with him, said he| had coine aboard looking for a job. llej was stated to have been behavinij strangely and was locked in a room in | the petty otiicers' quarters. After he eseaped by removing the screws in the lock of the door he was allowed to move freelv about the ship. Ile was last seen in the liremen's mess after niidnight on Thursdav. A thorough search of the ship wlis made but no traee of him was found and it is presumed he was Jost overboard. Two other stowawavs who were no' associated with Carroll were discovered by the chief engineor in the crew's quarters shortly after the Fort Coul ;gn left Svdnev. They were put to work in the gallev and stokehold and handed Over to the police at Auckland.
