HOROWHENUA COUNCIL MEETS The .chairman, Mr . G. A. Monk, .resided at a special meeting o± che Horowhenua County Cduncil on Friday, There wete alsoo present Crs. J. H. P. Liggins, A. M. Atkins, W. Taylor, W. Jerjkins, A. M. 'Colquhoun, A. J. Gimblett and 3. K. Guy, and Messrs. F. H. Hudson (clerk) and W. H. Ffaser (acting-engineer) . Roads at Waikanae A complaint was received from he Waikanae ProgressiVe Associahon that with the exception. oi ;hose already sealed, the roads in .he township were in poor condi;ion, the surface invariably disappearing, leaving large founda- . ion stones protruding.' Thest stones, continued the letter, were i potential danger to pedestrians. 3ide growth was also creeping to wards the centres, making the roads in many places less than .wo ear width. Ih conclusion it requested that they be widened and sealed. Two in particular, Waimea and Moana Roads, wer'e mentioned. The former required widening at two bends, and the edges of the bitumen were beginning to crumble. On the1 latter road, from the saleyards to the fcownship, considerable growth of gorse was obscuring visibility at some bends. The water supply in the township was very satisfactory, but a few residents still -connected to the old two inch pipes were receiving discoloured water. if was decided that the association be written to, advising that the council would give the matters ittention when the opportunity and finance were available, and that attention Would also be given to the cleari'ilg of the gorse referred to. Town Planning A question as to whether any move had yet been made in regard to the setting up' of an extra urban towh planning scheme, as outlined to theni by Mr. Monk, and if so whether Waikanae h?^ been gazetted accordingly, was contained in a letter from the Waikanae Progressive •Associatioii. . - . . .. .-n Commenting, Mr. Monk said the matter had not been lost sight of. Both Mr. Hudson and himself had .nterviewed the town planning authorities, and had been advised not to proceed with a local scheme, but one embracing the vvhole county. He had been prepared to submit one for Waikanae, out at that stage had not been "in the position to submit one invoiving the whole Gounty. It was the intention of the councii to make a date on which it could bring down such a scheme. The council decided to reply tc the association in these terms. Attention to Bridge That the Buckley Drainage Board proposed- soon to let a contract for the widening and deepening . of the Buckley Drain, from Koputaroa Stream for a distance of 107 chains, and that this would necessitate lengthening the bridge which crosses the Buckley Road was the basis of a letter received from Mr. H. R. Farquhar, surveyor and engineer of Palmerston North. Commenting an the letter," ' Mr. Fraser said' the road in question was not dpen to' general traffic. and he considered that work done Dy the Drainage Board was not the respoiisibility df the council It should, if it wished to alter the i ridge, be prepared to stand the cost. The chairman said that nc Bstimate as to cost had been sub^ mitted, and he did not think the question had been put to the muncil seriously. The bridge lad been buiit by the council, bu\ vhether the road was a public One or not, he considered it was still lot the function of the council tc meet the cost of any alteratioiis. under these circumstances. Mr, Hudson: We should write to them saying that we have nc objection to them carrying om the job to our satisfaction. Mr. Gimblett: I think that is a very good motion. (Laughtcr) . It was 'decided that iio ac'tiOh be taken at this stage.
