SCHEME TO TRAIN MOUNTAIN GUIDES
WELLINGTON, May 23. There is every possibility that the Goveru/nent will establish a schpol for mountain guides at ihe Ilermitage, Mount Cook, in the near future. This advice was given today bv the Dopart ment of Tourist and Health Resorts The tentative proposals are for tlu establishinent of eight trainees under the tutorship of M r. M. Bowie, chief guide at tlie Ilermitage. This nunibe would be increased as acconnuodation and other faeilities beeanie available An important feature of the training would be the issue of a certifieate when tlie trainee had, in the opiuion of the chief guide, reaclied tlie .requii'ed stand ( ard of eftieiency. This would create a i ]>recedent as f'ar as guiding qualifica tions in Xew Zealand were concorned. A necessary adjunet to the seheine ; would be the provision of eniploymerit for guides during tlie off season. There ( were many possibilities of occupation" as ski instructors, mainteuance workers ] on huts and hotels ovvned by tlie De j partment, or guides at the Waitomo : Caves and Milford traek. A further 1 suggestion was that they eould be ent ployed as fire lookouts for the Statf i forest service.
