NEW PAY RATES FOR DAIRY FACTORY HANDS

WELLINGTON, May 22. A wage inerease of 10s weekly for most workers is contained. in the New Zealand dairy faetoi'y - employees' award issucd toniglit. The u'orking week shall, as_ under the old award, commence at midnight on Sunday except in the case of a shift worker whose week shall start at the commencing time of the shift nearest to midnight Sunday. Sucdi hours shall be worked on the first five days on which a man works in any week, with a inaximum of eight hours on r\ny day without payment of overtime. Except in the case of workers receiving inilk or cream twice daily or neces«ary work incidental thereto, the hours in eacli day shall be continuous. Workers whose ordinary duty is that of reoeiving milk or cream and is performed in two periods with a break of not more than two hours in a day, shall he paid 2s (id'a day extra. Under the old award this payment was ls. A worker other than a shift worker required to, begin his ordinary hours before 5 a.m., shall be paid 2s 6d a day in addition to his ordinary rate. Shift workers whose normal duties begin before 6 a.m or after midday shall be paid 2"s 6d a shift extra. The wage rates for adult male work ers has been increased by 10s weekly under most of the various classilica tions. The new basie rate is £5 11s 8d weekly plus the Court's wo cost of living bonuses. Increases -.in the rates for youths vary from 5s to 9s weekly and for females from 7s 6d to 9s. A worker engaged for less than five days shall be deemed a casual worker

The award, insofar as it affects wage rates, operates retrospectJvely tu February 10, 1917, and so far as all other conditions are concerned, comes into forpe as from May "21, 1917. The award will continue in operation uutii May 81, 1918. Under a special provision workers Who were employed on or after Jauuary 27, 1917, are entitled to arrears ot wages for each week of eniployment be fore February 10 but not exceeding 18 vveeks before that date, on the following bases: — Adult male workers, a fiat I rate of 10s weekly, other workers a fiat rate of 6s 8d weekly.
