Ile was replying to Alrs. Braddoct who read extracts from a lqfter whielt she said had been smuggled out of tln gaol. The letter described the prison ar a second Belsen and alleged that tb : prisoners slept 011 woodeu boards unde bug int'ested blankets. The prison gov ernor f'took a sadistic delight" in bcal ing prisoners with rattan whicli markeu their bodies for montlis. Mr. Thomas saui it was an exaggera tion t.o use the term Belsen. The over crowding in tiie prison was entirely dui to the pievalence of crime in the armew forces. .Most of the inen had been sen tenced for armed robbery with violeuce. (le had 110 evidence to support the alle gation that prisoners laeked medica. facilities and could not eomment 01. allegations of whipping but would bring the niatter to the atteution of the Gov eriior of Singapore.
