The Ohau Bridge In an effort to decrease the danger risk on the Ohau traffie bridge, the Public Works Department this morning commeneed to lay a rough sealed surface on the wooden decking. Building Permits Permits for five new dwelhngs, valued in all at £8030, were issued by the Levin Borough Council during the month of April. _ One permit valued at £20 for additions and alterations to a dwelling was issued during the same period. There were no applications for permits to erect buildings of other types. Issues of Library Books A total of 80,543 books were issued from the Levin Public Library during the year ended March 31 last. They were made un of the following: — Local issues: Fiction 65,705, non-fiction 3556, junior 5470. N National Library Service: Fiction 2983, non-fiction 2829. The membership comprised 1603 adults and 315 juniors. This information was ' given to ldst night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council by the librarian, Mrs. M. Whitaker, ProsecUtions in Future Building in the borough without a permit or in contravention of the by-laws, will in future result in the prosecution of those concerned. This decision was reached at a meeting' of the Levin Borough Council last night following the discussion of a transit house erected without the necessary permit, due to a misunderstanding on the part of the Gwner. It was emphasised that a permit was necessary for all building work, which must also comply with the borough by-laws. Abattoir Fees The fees at the Levin Abattoir for April totalled £1199 14s 6d, as compared with £920 in the same month of last year. Reporting to last night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council, the manager, Mr. F. E. Larsen, advised that the following stock had been slaughtered during the month, the rigures for April, 1946, being given in parentheses: Cattle 619 (535), sheep and lambs 5005 (4033), calves 204 (87) and pigs 843 (570). The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin. commented on the growth of the business. '
' Support for Sanatorium "We can now do. everything possible to' ensure that the sanatoriiim is erected on the site selected in Levin," said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, at a meeting of th Levin Borough Council last night. He was re/erring to a recent meeting of the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce, at -which the medical superintendent of the Otak, Sanatorium, Dr. T. M. Wilson, had dispelled the fear that the proposed sanatorium would be a potential danger to public health. "It will mean a great deal to the progress of Levin and district," added Mr. Burdekin, in thanking ' he chambejt: for the opportunity afforded councillors of hearing Dr. Wilson. Hospital Statistics The following st.atistics for the month of April were submitted by the medical superintendent, Mr. J. H.- North, to a meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday: — Patients admitted 389, discharged 370, died 18, remaining end of April 302, daily average number of occUpied beds 296.3. Infectious diseases admitted: Diptheria 1, hydatid 1. Maternity home admissions : Palmerston North 41, Foxton 10, Otaki 21, Feilding 15. Births: Palmerston North 39, Foxton 9, Otaki 17, Feilding 15. Remaining in home at end of April: Palmerston North mothers 13, babies 12; Foxton, 3, 3; Otaki, 11, 10; Feilding, 3, 3. Daily. average of occupied beds: Palmerston North 20.27, Foxton 3.56, ► J Otaki 6.68, Feilding 5.53.
