Capronella And Rhodesia Win Big Flat Races At Woodville
• The Woodville winter meeting was held on Saturday in brilliant weather following early fog and there was a very large attendance. . - Big fields paraded for each event and the totalisator turnover — £48,580 — estabhghed a new high level for the clnh, heing £1254^ ahove the previous hest recoraed at the summer meeting in December, and £3854 better than the . £44,726 put through at last year's winter meeting. Mary Lee Just Beat Glen Urquhart. ' The hurdles were run at a fast ciip and the winner was Mary Lee, which' finished brilfiantly to head Glen Urquhart just short of the line. St. Hilton also finished well and he paid a substantial dividend for a place. Glen Urquhart and Sir Wina led over the tliird fence from Gunman, St. Hilton, Tortago, Grand Central, Spiro, Tuatara, Mary Lee, Red' Rocket, Rockanui and Bonifort well elear of Trio ahead of Gay Return and Terhan. The field was well spread out as they raced down tne l)ack and Glen Urquhart and Sir Wina led into the straight closely attended by Gunman, Spiro, Mary Lee and St. Hilton. Glen Urquhart looked likely a half furlong from the line but Mary Lee finished just too well for him. St. Hilton was a length away just in front of Spiro and next home were Grana Central, Gunman and Rockanui. Beau Or Finished Well. II Corona led out from the barrier in the First Novice Plate and Beau Or tackled him in the straight, the pair fighting a desperate hattle whi'ch was won by Beau Or by half a head. Theio Cass was in third place at the home tuni and Red Sari, False Step and Wiremu were next, and False Step did best of the ofchers in the run home and she beat Revelate for third money. Moderate Was Impressive. A brilliant finishing run landed Moderate home winner of the Steepleehase i'or the second year in succession. High Morale looked a winner a furlong from home but Moderate, when asked for his final effort, went past him to win aecisively by two lengths. Light Tea, from Feilding, was third, and Cuisinier was fourth. Gay Rouen fell at the first fence and Wineberry went down over him. Skyhawk led to the double brush the first time but he ran down the second of them and lost his rider. With a mile still to go Cuisinier and Lanoma were in front from High Morale and Light Tea and Moderate was next. They were in close order over the double brush. High Morale had charge half a mile from home and when he outjumped the others at the last fence but one his chances appeared bright. Moderate followed him into the last fence ahd then beat him home. Light Tea finished well for third four lengths back and Cuisinier and Lanoma were next. Capronella' s Fine Finishing Run. With a fine run from the home turn Capronella deeisively won the,, May Handicap but there was a blanket finish for second and Silver Rod, Sheilwyn, Longsword and Persuade went past at half-head intervals. Revetir was in front' before they had gone far and he led out of the straight followed by Sailor Boy, Persuade, Baicherrie, Barrage, Filature, Longsword, Sparkling Lady, Prince Wanaka, Top Shot, Sheilwyn, True Friend, Silver Rod, Horniuz, Paganini, : Capronella; Flahuluk ahd Incline. There was: hot much change at the half mile and Persuade led into the straight attended by Revetir, Sailor Boy, Incline, Paganj.nl, Capronella and Sparkling Lady. Capronella had taken charge at the distance and she won easily by t'liree lengths from Silver Rod which got up just in time to beat Sheilwyn, Longsword and Persuade almost in line. Molly Adair Won' Nicely. 'Ihe Second Novice Plate was won by Molly Adair from Shenandoah and incision. Dickens and Land Chief were first to break the line and Dickens lea into the straight on terms with Viliage Girl and Desert Chant and Land Chief, Molly Adair and Incision were close behind them. Molly Adair was in front a furlong from home and she won nicely by two lengths from Shenandoah which finished well to beat Incision by half a length. Valliere w;as fourth and Dickens and Desert Chant were next. Rhodesia Just Beat Lady 'Nahleen. There was an exciting finish to the open sprint which was won by' Rhodesia bv a short neck from Lady Nahleen ana Cooraclare finished fast only a necK Purther back. Sir Boswell led early from Rhodesia, Lady Nahleen, Hostiiity and Trig Point. Lady Nahleen was in charge as they turned into tne straight and Sir Boswell, Rhodesia, Trig Point, Hostility and Cooraclare were next. Lady Nahleen was in front a furlong from home but was under pressure and Rhodesia beat her over the last bit. Cooraclare finished brilliantiy to beat Lord Theio for third money. Next were Trig Point, Hadrian and lioyai Duce. Currency Lass Scored Attractively. Currency Lass was in front early m the Mangapapa Handicap and from the home turn she always looked a winner. Te Aki, Even Light, Joe's Cobber ana Aristea followed Currency Lass into the straight but the issue was never in doubt, Currency Lass winning deeisively by over a length fro.m Even Light hmlf a length in front of Joe's Cobber. Aristea was fourth followed by Culloden Moor, Registrar and Our Jock. Another Close Finish. Pram won the last race by half a head from 'Master Gary and Blackwater was third two lengths away. Court Judge, Patu-Ra, Lord Bradbury, Fen and Audacious began best and Earnbridge, Pram, Master Gary, PatuRa and Blackwater were prominent inthe run to the straight where Master Gary went to the front only to go down by half a head to Pram. Blackwater was two lengths away half a head m front of Earnbridge and Lord Bradbury and Court Judge were next.
