SHANNON AND WANDERERS DRAW
Before the largest crowd seen on the Shannon Domain this season, Shannon seniors drew with Wanderers with eight points all. Expectatins of a fast and closelycontested match were realised, play going from one end of the field to the other with thrills for both team's supporters. The match was marked by the bril- ^ liant solo efforts of Don Cole, one of Shannon's forwards, and the deadly low tackling and solid defence of H. Heremaia, Wanderers' young centre. The game commenced at a fast clip, with Wanderers on the atiack. A fine break by Winiata and Milroy saw them close to scoring, but an excellent line kick by Pedersen saved Shannon. At this stage Wanderers were forcing the pace and had plenty of chances through poor ' tackling. by the Sfiannon team, but just could not realise until Heremaia opened up for McCready to score a well deserved try. Stackhouse, with a great kick, added the extras. Wanderers 5, Shannon 0. At this stage Robinson (Shannon) had to leave the field owing to a severe khock and he was replaced by L. Higgott, Wanderers returned to attack at the Shannon line again, but Pedersen Cleared with "another good line kick. Attacking again the Wanders' half sent the ball out to Sciascia, who sent it on to Heremaia, but he was well taken from behind by Ellison. Half-time sounded with Wanderers "still on the attack and the score unchanged. Higgott kicked off for Shannon at the opening of the second half, but his kick went behind the visitors' line for Skilton to recover and find touch on his twenty-five yard line. Shannon commenced to' waken up after * a lethargic first half.- Cole "iecured the ball and outstripped his5 ' own forwards, only to*be brought down on Wanderers' five yard line. From the ensuing scrum Wanderers gained possession for Skilton to make a flne kick, which found touch five yards out from his twenty-five. From the lineout Wanderers' secured the ball and Sciascia sent it on 'to Heremaia, who was duly grounded by Higgott. An off-side move by the home forwards gave Stackhouse another kick at goal, which proved successful. Wanderers 8, Shannon 0. From the kick-off Shannon » appeared determined to even the points. From a good forward rush the ball went to Moynihan, wno scored under the posts. The ball was charged before being grounded and things looked certain for Shannon when the referee, Mr. S. Graham, ordered a free kick. Aitchison, who was holding the ball for Pedersen, was having some difficulty in placing it correctly. Pedersen came forward to place it v himself and the kick was dis- \ allowed. This incident had a most ynfortunate bearing on the game from the home side's poirit of vie.w. Wanderers 8, Shannon 3. From the kick-off play went back to the home twenty-five. Cole gained - possession and dribbled the length of the field for Ellison to go over for another try, This time Pedersen had no difficulty in addipg the extra two ' points to bring the score to eight all. From combined back and forward attacks the ball went to Moynihan who appeared from the "ide-line to have scored, but the movement was disallowed. This ckused some discontentment among the Shannon team's supporters. The game continued in a series of line-outs and set scrums, with the ball proceeding from one 6nd of the field to the other, until (Continued on Page 8) I
