County Inspeotion The Horowhenua County Council last week carried out its annual inspectio'n of roads and areas under its jurisaiction.

Knocked Down by Car A retired solicitor died on Saturday night as the result of being knocked down by a motor car on Friday evening. He was Mr. Cecil Lancelot Drew, aged 65, si'ngle, of Remuera. As far as is known he had no relatives in New Zealand. Chinaman Found Injured A Chinaman, Shing Kee, aged 43, of Foxton, was admitted to the Palmerston Nort.h Hospital yesterday suffering from a cut in the back of the head, and bruises to his face. He was found lying in a vacant section at Foxton by Mr. E. Titcombe at 8.30 a.m. yesterday. The Chinaman's clothing was scattered around the section. He appeared very dazed and was unable to say what had happened to him. The police are investigating. Man Ove'rboard Cries for help from a man in the harbour were heard by the ferry boat master (Captain H. Pitcher) at 10 o'clock on Friday night as the ferry was travelling from Devonport to Auckland. A Maori passenger shouted, "Man overboard!" and dived over the side to rescue him. ' The man in»the water was Mr. Laurie Swarford, aged 50. The captain stopped the * boat and trained a searchlight on the man, who was taken aboard after a boat had been lowered. Mr. Swarford was admitted to hospital and his condition was satisfactory. The casualties were:— Killed: Stanley Hogwood, aged about 26, of Riccarton, single. Injured; William Orton Langdown, aged about 37, of Governor's- Bay. Mr. Langdown, who is the owner of the car, received only slight injuries, which did not necessitate his admission to hospital. He w.as a passenger in the front seat of the car. Tne accident occurred about 1 a.m., when the car ran off the road and overturned after a tyre had been punctured. .
