Food Situation Increases Absenteeism

Received Saturday, 11 a.m. LONDON, May 9. The Ruhr's coaL, output was 750,000 tons below expectations last month and the output per man dropped and absenteeism increased, says the Associated Press' Essen corresnondent. Both British and German officials say that the de#^terioration can be attributed to the \ food position. They explain that absenteeism is largely due to the miners taking days off to search the countryside for food. The Mayor of Essen, in a public announcement, told the people that they could expect only 740 calories daily for the next fortnight. There would not be enough potatoes even for the miners, who usually have first consideration.
