MEETING OF COMMITTEE _ The monthly meeting cf the Otaki State School. Committee was held on *Tuesday night, there being present Messrs % H. Taylor (chairman) , L. (3-. Gimblett (secretary) , W: Wilson, H. B. Edhouse, N Taylor, H. Nicolson, A. G. Kirkwood and J. E. James (headmaster. A welcome was accorded Mr. Kirkwood, who fllls the vacancy caused by the retirement of. Mr. Les Walsh. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. W. A. Calwell and A. Lumley. 4 It was decided to' allow the use of the s'choolroom for adult education meetings. ' Arrangements were made . to hold a shop day at an early date to raise money for school purposes, while it was suggested that a concert be held towards the end of the year, arrangements to be made with the Otaki Borough Council for the use of the theatre. It was resolved to again point out ■ the necessity o'f providing increased accommodation for school children, and to request the Wellington Education • Board to secure the use of the Maori schoolroom. A suggestion was made by district schools that a committee's association be formed, and this have consideration later. The secretary was asked to write to the Horowhenua Rugby Union, thanking it for its gift of three footballs, which are greatly appreciated. It was decided that two .more basketballs be secured for school use. 0 Mr. James reported that the state of accommodation for the staff was most unsatisfactory, the offlce (10ft. by 8ft.) being used as a common room. On account of the lack of convenience the matter of giving, children hot drnks during the winter months was held in abeyance. Heaclmaster's Report The headmas ter reported that the number on the roll at May 5 was 194 boys and 184 girls, a total of 378. The average attendance to that date was ■ 173 boys and 160 girls. The epidemic of chickcn pox had passed and the geheral health of the children appearea good. "Miss McNaughton, arts spqcialist, has visited the school ..on .two occasions. During. April Miss N. J. Campbell left aiid Mrs. Renner I filled her position. Miss Beverley has been appointed to the A grade mistress' position, replacing Miss McGreevy. Miss B. Richards has been appointed to the "B" grade position. "It is ' again my pleasure to report the care and attention I being given :the buildings and | grounds, which are in cxcellent I eo'ndition. If the baths site could | be decided, Mr. Walsh has offerecl to spread some of the soll on the football ground. "The senior rooms' piano has been treated for borer. Both instruments ar_e in need of tuning and as one will be needed for the coming festival, I ask permission to have it tpned aiid used for this purpose. The festival's committee is prepared to- defray the ! cost of this tuning. The commit- | tee of the music festival requests | that a member of your committee join a deputation to the Borough 'Council re the halLhire for the J festival. i "A new supply of infant readers I is * required to replace those in jpoor condition. ' Mr. Wilson's donation of timber for repairs to infant apparatus is appreciated. 1 The school closes for the term j vacation on Friday hext, and will resume on Monday, May 26. ; During next term the lunch period ; will be for oue hour only, the school closing at 3 p.m. instead of j 3.15 for the first and third terms." The committee received the ; report and the matters raised ' therein will have attention.
