- YQIJNG FARMERS' EVENING The monthly meeting of the Levin Young Farmers' Club was held reeently, Mr. M. Rolston pre.siding over a good attendanc.e of members. Two new members were- enrolled. Final arrange-ments were made for the forthcoming field day at the- Foxton Woolpack and Textiles 'factory on May 7- Mr.~R. Denton was nominated by the club to attend the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce meetings as a representative from the club. The speaker for the evening was Mr. W. Penny, who gave a most interesting and' praetieal demonstration on solderfng. Mr. Penny first gave a short address on -the poi-nts to. b,e watched for In soldering, and the use of cor^rect fluxes with different metals. As in most. other trades, soldering requi'red* a certain ampunt- of, practice before it could be done successfully,. said' Mr. Penny. One main- essemtial was the correct fcemperature of the iron and this could 'be judged' by hol'dlng. the 'ron close tb the cheek. All motai had to be free from grease or dirt^ before even attempting to solder. The solder should fiow over the metals evenly and rough finished surfaces should be avoided,. as breaks were likely to> oceur. The irons needed to b.e well tinned first,. and this could be done by dipping the iron in the fiux, o-r bv
the 'use of sal-ammoniac.' Mr. Penny demonstrated quite a number qf joi-nts and then invited members to try their hand- at soldering. - Mf. Penny was thanked for his most instructive talk, which had proved very interesting. The next meeting will be held on June 5. ,
