MAY DAY PARADES
Beceived Friday, 8.55 p.m. NEW YOBK, May 1. The annual May Day parade was marked by posters directed at the defeat of pendiug auti-labour legislation and President Trumau's programme of aid to Greece, Turkey _ aud Chma. ' ' Let the Greek people decide their own destiuy," "Hitlen cried red and democracy was dead," and "Free Spain now" were charaeteristic of the posters. It is estimated that 100,000 took part in the niarch. Later they gathered in Union Square where they heard speakers, including the negro singer, Panl Bobeson. In' Teheran the Military Governor banned all meetings and denionstrations. The Greek Government banned demonstrations, but the Leftists planne'd work stoppages in Athens. Belgium and Norway celebrated the day as a legal holiday for the first time. In Trieste,- British, American and civil police used tear-gas, water hoses and mounted squads to scatter the antiAllied demonstration by over 5000 Italians after May Day celebrations. The demonstrators attempted to parade, despite the ban • on processions, and; stoned the police. ' A Palermo despatch says that six were killed, including a wonian, and 20 were injured when unlcnown persons liiding in the hills surrouiiding a nearby village fired machineguns at 4000 workers going to a May Day celebration. Twenty thousand people at a demonstration in Dusseldorf heard ,Herr Fritz Stahl call, for increased food, a halt in the dismantling of machinery for reparations and greater participation by unions in State affairs. In widespread demonstrations in the Buhr there were many banners with slogans: "Give us bread. We axe' hunQvyy . , , , •
