POINTED REMARKS BY BISHOP GERARD
"In Australia and New Zealand we have the men and the women, we have the blood, we have the soil, we have the climate to make our countries truly great, but have we the faith? At present I doubt it," said Bishop G. V. Gerard, formerly Bishop of Waihpu, preaching at the annual Anzac Day commemorative service in Saint M artiu 's-in-the-Fields. The Bishop said he saw the danger of slothfulfiess and materialis.m dominating our conception of life. This was influeuced to some extent by a feeliug tliat after the great exertions of the British peoples during the war they were entitled to relax. True democracy was a practical exeinpiilLcatioii of the Christian way of life and could not be achieved without a return to the old simple virtues ot hard work, saerifice, love of country, and love of our neighbours. The sacrilices made by the men of Anzac and their successors earned us the oppoi:-' tunity to choose our way of life, but oqr own sacrifices and hard work were necessary to keep what they had won.
