WHEAT YIELD ABOVE AVERAGE
CIIRISTCH DRCII, May 1. Wheat yields in New Zealand are well above the average this season on the whole and the yield estimate is 37 I bushels an acre. This was reported by Dr. O. H. Frankel, chief executive officer of the Wheat Besearch Ihstitute at the Wheat Besearch Committee 's meeting. Dr. Frankel said that this no_ doubt was a reflection on the high and well distributed rainfall during the main growing season. On the whol'e harvesting took place uuder very fav» ourab.le conditions although in most parts of tho South Island it was quite three to four weeks later than usual. South Cantcrbury had moist weather iii March which caused difticulties with late sown crops. There was & .severe and widespread incidence of mildew and later many crops were attacked by scab and leaf rust. Frosts in November probably causefl a good deal of damage although difficult to aseertain Frost elaims for damage during flowering were fewer than in previous years. Ashburton had a hailstorm on January 4 which, however, affected only- a limited district round the towTn.
