Received Friday, 10.4& a.m. NEW YORK, May 1. ' / f Despite vigorous Arab objections^, the United Nations * Assembly today decided to lfiace on the agenda the British proposal' for the establishment of a committee to investigate the Palestine problem, thu's addpting the recommendation of Ihe Assembly's steering committee, which has been the scene of a bitter struggle over the last two days. Th Arabs want the Assembly to consider immediately the termination of the British mahdate and the declaration of Palestine independence. The delegates from Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia heatedly told the Assembly today that all the facts about Palestine were already known, and there was no need for the committeh. • Dr. Radhul Jamali (Iraq) appealed torihe United States to cease advocating further Jewish immigration into Palestine, saying passionately : "Part of our home is on fire and ihe flames are spreadi-ng. Immigration is like petrol poured 011 Ihe flames." - , . . . . , \ Both 'Dr. Jamali and Fans el Khoury (Syria) clashed v.ith President Oswaido Aranha, who warned them that they were straying too far from the subject under discussion. After nearly a ttvo houfs' debate the Assembly adopted the British proposal without a dissentient voice. - Meanwhile, the United Press reports that the United States has suddenly abandoned her opposition to givmg the Jows a voice in the discussions, and is seeking a forrriula to onable a representative Jewish Agency to participate. The United Press believes that the ilew American attitude results from strong pressure which the Jewish Agency has been exerting iii Washington, and its repeated appea s to President Truman. It is believed that the United States will still o'ppose the Jewish request for representation m the Assembly itself, because of the precedent which might thus he created, biit will favour al'lowing a Jewish spokesman to appear befote one of the Assembly's committees.
