FIRST NEW ZEALANDER TO GO ASHORE AT GALLIPOLI

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 27. The tirst New Zealander to go ashore at Gallipoli in 1915 and the last to leave the Peninsula in the evacuation eight months later, Mr. Williarn Hayvvard, died at New Plymouth today. Leaving with the Main Body he was 011 active service for 4 years and 11 inonths. When the second world war .broke out he was among the first to enlist and he subsequently served in vari-' ons capacities including 12 months in the field in Fiji. Mr. Hayward had his 56th birthday on Xmas Day. Of the veterans of the first world war lie was among the niost widely known in the Doininion. At the Gallipoli landing he was a member of the advance party of six and was first of the six to junip ashore from a barge. Some of the other flvc were killed and when he died Mr. Hayward was the last survivor of the band. With Mr. Clifford Hayson he was the last to leave in Deceniber 1915. Having gone away as a private he returned to New Zealand as a lieutenant. | After serving as Assistaut Area Ofiicer at New Plymouth in the second i world war, Mr. Hayward went to Fiji I in charge of a mortar platoon of D Company, 29th Battalion, 8th Brigade. Twelve ■months later he retnrned to New Zealand. Though in ill health he j becaine adjutant to the New Plymouth Battalion of the Home Guard before returniug to civilian life.
