Council Discusses Many ' Matters A 'number of matters of interest ! rn regard to the administration o; uhe town were dealt with at the \ Aprfl meethig of the Levin Borough Council last night. There were present: The Mayor, Mr. H, B. Burdekin (in the c'hair)*, Crs. H.* E. B.owe'n, A. O. Powell, V. E. Hudson, C. H, Cockrell, W. Teliord, C. Sb.erwood, F. D. Chainey and D. J. Gardiner, and Messrs. H. L. Jenkins (town clerk), R. McIlraith (assistant) and K. W. Sandford (engineer) . Leave oi absence was- granted Cr. F. E. Par.ter. Levin Park Domain The- use of the Levin Park Domain for the 1947 fdotball season was applied for by the Hbrowhenua Rugby Union, which off ered the council the usual rental of 10 per ' cent. of the gross gate takings. — Granted. A recommendation was brought down by the works committee chat the provision of adequate women's conveniences ' on the domain be considered when the estimates were being framed. This was adopted ' by the council, the Mayor commenting that although the council had done a . great deal of work at the domain che conveniences were urgently required. The town clerk informed the meeti'ng that the Wanderers and Athletie , Football Clubs had paid their contribution of £10 each to- - wards the restoration of the j electric lighting at the domain. This was received with gratification by the council. Foxton Harbour Board A letter from the ^Foxton Harbour Board invited the council to appoint a delegate to attend a meeting to be called to consider the desirability or otherwise of retaining the Foxton Harbour Board. The council was of the opinion that the board should be wound up, and appointed. the Mayor as delegate to the meetmg. The board also forwarded acopy of a special resolution levying a differential special rate of onetwelfth of a penny in the £ on the capital value of the Levin, Borough for the year ending September 30, 1947, and estimated to produce £22 18s 8d. — Held over until the council's special meeting to consider its eatimates. Requests for Grants The Levin Junior Chamber qf Commerce sought the council's' financial assistance in the part it was going to play in the national road safety eampaign which was being undert&ken in the near future by Junior Chambers throughout the Dominion. The council felt that it could not contribute as road safety was. essentially . thd provin.ce of the Transport : "Department, and the eampaign ' would cause more . overlapping than there existed at present. The Levin Boy Scout Committee made application for a grant towards its fund to send three local scouts to the world jamborbe' in Franee this yeat. A grant of £5 was agreed to.1' Land Sub-divisions Messrs. Blenkhorn and Todd, writing on behalf of Mrs. E. S. Walkley, asked ' that the council accept a deposit to cover the cost of kerbing, channelling and footpath work in the street thrqugh her Weraroa sub-division, the work to be carried out by the couneil when . supplies of cement were available. A similar application was made in respect of Mrs. Routley's sub-division in, Salisbury Street. The council agreed to accept a deposit of £60 per chain, with the proviso that within three months of the Completion of .the work there be a settlement, the owneys to pay vqpy adelitionalv cost or tbe council to refund 'to them x'ny surplus. | For Mr. W. G. 'Bishop, another j letter from the same flrm enquired ;if an agreement could be entered into with the council for him to carry out the kerbing, channelling and footpath work on the new streets in his Winchester Street sub-division when supplies of cement were available. It was decided that provided a bond could be devised which was aceeptable to the council it was prepared to agree in, principle to the suggestion, and that to tbis end Messrs. Bleskhorn and Todd lpproach the borough solicitors to arrive at some satisfactory bond for submission to the council. A "communication from the Levin Municipal Band asked the rouncil if it would be possible tc reserve the bandroom solely for its activities and those of the Levin Boys' Band. — Decided that while the council would always give the fullest consideration tc applications by the band's for use of the room, it regretted that until another suitable place was ivailable for meetings the reques! could not be acceded to. The Medical Offieer of Health in a letter, stat'ed that the suggested new rates of contributior for the services given to loca: authorities by sanitary inspector? had been arrived at after a Dom-inion-wide survey. .. He expressec the wish that the council see way to agree to the new rates vhich represented an increase From 9d to lud per capita for the borough. Some discussion followed and it was finally decided thal the council express its preparedness to call a eonference of inter- - ested local bodies to ccnsider the appointment of a combin,ed sanitary and building inspector. gerous state of the ditch in Montgomery Street, and asking that the matter be attended to, a letter -was received from Mr. P. Leong. On the recommendation of ihe works committee, the council decided to give the matter conuderation- when framing the estimates,, with a view to providrng a conqreoe kerb ana chahnel. Messrs. Yates Cash Storcs, Ltd., wroce drawing attention to thp arab appearance of the interior of ne shop occupied by them in the Municipal Builamgs, and enquired if it could. be painted white. — Held over pending the rearrangement of rentals for shops in tnc Municipal Buildings. A circular letter from the Municipal Association indicated that ne Govenrment would promote the necessary legislation during the next session of Parliament to i/alidate local body. subscriptions to the "Tribute to London" fund, and asked the council to forwara its proportion. The council approved the payment of its share of g12, assessed on the basis of a levy of £3 per 1000 head of population. As a result of a petition from residents in regard to the condition of George Street, the works : committee recommended that a 4- ; foot wide gravel path be formed 1 on the western side of the street 1 at an estimated cost of £63. — Approved* by the council. y — "gg
