LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR SIX BOYS: RAPE
Received Monday, 9.30 p.nt. SYDXEY, April 21. Six boys wliose ages ranged from 14 to 16 year's were sentenced to life im-\ prisonment today for rajie. " Passing sentence, Mr. Justice Owc.ii said that under the Crinies Act he h'a t no alternative to imposing the sentences but he would recouilnend tha they be served in a child welfare in stitution. A representative of the Child Wel fare Department whom the Judqi questioned, told him the departmen. would aslc the Attornev General to havt the boys transf erred to child welfarceontrbl. A sentence of death wjas ]prononnceo on a 19-year-old labourer for a similar offenee but, in aceofdance with State practiee, this will be commuted to li f imprisonment. ' 'These boys are here because of rotten booze, " cried the father of one when giving evidence as to character He collapsed weeping and was carried from the Court.
