•Received Tuesday, 9.50 a.m. NEW YORK, April 21. Aid to countries threatened by alieh ideologies depeiided up'dii Ghfe maintaining of America's high levei of productiOh afid prdspefity. This was emphasised by Prbsident Truman in an address. to the annual meeting of the Associated Pxess. We knew, said the Presidbnt, that the freedom and integrity of ' the Uhited States were safe only in a world of free peoples, living at peace with their neighbours and sngaging in free and fribrrdly ccnV merCe. Hence it was the policy of the Uhited States to aid the worLd's free peoples in their effprts to maintain freedom. Many oi |hese peoples were confronted with a choice betweeh totalltariahism and democracy. This decision had been forced on them by the devastation of war, which had so impoverished them that they were easy targetsfor external pressures and alien ideologies. "By providing economic assistance in the .tasks of recohstruction we can enable these countfieS to' withstand the f orces which so directly threaten their way Of life, and ultimately our own weil-being, but we can provide the neceSSdry assistance only if we oiirselYes remain prosperous," said President Truman. He contended that excessive wholesale prices were hittihg at the foundation of the nrosperity of the United Statds, and iSstted- a plea for moderation in the price and wage scales.
