Graham for the supply of metal for the ? year, as per the specifications, was 1 accepted on the motion of Cr. • Roaeh. J The secretary of the Shannon branch of the Plunket Society for- ; warded a copy- of its annual ; report and balance sheet for the year ended March 31 > 1947, which was read and received. In connection with the proposed purchase of a section in Plimmer Terrace by the council, the secretary of the Local Government Loans Board advised that the purchase of land by instalments was expressly authorised by the Municipal Corporatlons Act, 1933, subject to the prior approval of the Minister of Intemal Affairs, and such purchase was not deemed to be an . act of borrowing. Under these circumstances it was not, therefore, obligatory to submit the matter to the Local Government Loans Board nor a poll of the ratepayers. On the motion of Cr. Curren, the town clerk was instructed to proceed with the purchase' of the land. Cr. Lind, chairman of the works committee, gave an interesting report on the meeting of local bodies, when the -Minister of Works outlined the ten-yefar plan of works. It was decided that an inspection be made of the borough streets and water supply retriculation at the weekend, after which estimates would be prepared of the proposed work and a meeting of the finance committee would be held. It was reported by .Cr. Roach,, chairman of the domains committee, that the repairs .to the domain buildings and conveniences was at present under way. The offer of -iMr. J. Raper to supply two concrete pipes to improve the intersection of Vogel and Vance Streets was left in the hands of the works committee. Following a .discussion, it was decided that .the town. clerk be instructed to wjrite . the insurance companies with>. regard- to themmakittg a" donation- towards the purchase of a new fire engine. The passing :of accounts to the amount of £83 4s 5fi completed thebusiness of the meeting. Health OlTicer's Repor't His report for the period from January 1 to March 31 wajs presented by the Health officju', Mr.t W. J; Gui'nan, ••at' the fort'nightly' meeting of the'' Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening. The report was as follows: — "There were no cases of infectious diseases during the period. The number of habitations, including dwellings, hotels and boarding houses, visited during the period was three and one requisition was served. Two food selling premises were inspected ahd 110 requisitions were served. Five inspections of plumbing and drainmg had been made and four requisitions served. Two samples of milk and one of water had been, taken during the period. "Inspections have been made at the nightsoil site and rubbish dump. Also of the swimming baths and the domain conveniences. Five septic tank drainage systems have been tested and approved. Complaints about defective drainage disposal at the State houses have been attended to." The report was accepted by the council.
